The 911 is one of Porsche's most iconic nameplates, and to celebrate its 60th anniversary, the German automaker released a special edition S/T model.
When the discussion is about legendary automotive nameplates, few are more iconic than Porsche and the 911. With that in mind, the German brand has now turned up the wick by launching a special edition 911 model aimed exclusively at purists known as the S/T.
Inspiration was drawn from the late 1960s when Porsche offered a special race version of the 911 S – known as the 911 ST. Everything from the chassis, wheels, engine and body was improved for optimal performance in that particular model. Now, 60 years later, the new 911 S/T takes up the spirit of the original 911 S and transfers it to the current model generation.
For starters, the 911 S/T is a carbon fibre model with exterior sections like the bonnet, doors, front wings and roof all made of lightweight carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP). The same treatment is applied to the roll cage, rear axle anti-roll bar and shear panel that, keeps the overall kerb weight low at 1 380kg – making it the lightest 911 of the 992 generation.
Calling all purists
In that lightweight chassis is the high-revving naturally aspirated 4.0-litre Boxer engine from the 911 GT3 RS that produces 386kW and 465Nm – but that's not the fun part. For the first time, that engine is paired to a short-ratio six-speed manual gearbox (and lightweight clutch). It propels the 911 S/T to 100km/h in 3.7- seconds with a top speed of 300km/h, and a lightweight sports exhaust system amplifies the sounds from the rear.
For those that like technical facts, the S/T is the only 911 of the current generation to combine a double-wishbone front-axle design with a multi-link rear axle without rear-axle steering.
Engineers in Weissach optimised the aerodynamics of the 911 S/T for the public road rather than the track. Standard features include a Gurney flap on the extending rear spoiler, 20-inch (front) and 21-inch (rear) lightweight magnesium wheels, carbon bucket seats and the four-way-adjustable Sports Seat Plus package. The instrument cluster and the clock of the Sport Chrono package are finished in a classic green Porsche colour scheme.
For customers who want even more exclusivity, there's the optional Heritage Design package. It includes a Shoreblue Metallic body colour and Ceramica wheel rim colour. On the doors, a starting number from 0 to 99 and a decorative foil can be applied on request. There's also a classic-design Porsche crest from the original 911 in the front, on the hub caps, steering wheel, headrests and car key.
The interior comes with cloth seat centres in Classic Cognac with black pinstripes, two-tone semi-aniline leather trim in Black/Classic Cognac leather with extensive leather surrounds, a roof lining in perforated Dinamica, and other elements from Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur. The Porsche logo and the 911 S/T model designation on the car's rear are coated in gold.
Exclusivity all round
Porsche Design also allows customers to own the Chronograph 1 – 911 S/T timepiece. It features a titanium case (uncoated and blasted for weight-saving reasons) that directly correlates with the 911 special edition.
From the days of air- and water-cooled engines, Porsche has refined the 911 to be the perfect all-rounder with the ideal blend of agility and performance.
Porsche will only be producing a total of 1 963 examples. If you want to own one, the model is available to order in South Africa with a starting price of R6.2-million.
