  • Marriage can be scary, especially when you think about meeting your partner's family.
  • Unfortunately, some have not been lucky to find a family that welcomed them. However, others hit the jackpot.
  • These are the heartwarming stories of those who married into a family that treated them as family.

We've all heard horror mother-in-law stories, but to be fair, not all in-law relationships are strained. We have come across some heartwarming in-law stories that could be straight from a Hallmark movie.

  • My mother-in-law was my best friend

I met my mother-in-law in church before I even knew my husband. She was the most wonderful person ever. I had grown up without my mom, so I longed for the love of a mother, and she became just that to me. I could speak to her about anything.

She was my shoulder to cry on, and she was hilarious; we would laugh till our stomachs hurt. I only met my husband a year later when he started joining his mom at church. I think she played matchmaker. Sadly, she died a few years ago, but I was very blessed to know her. And she raised a wonderful son.

  • My mom-in-law is my shopping buddy

My mother-in-law is my shopping buddy. We both love getting dressed up. She is almost 70 but is a fashionista, so we’re always looking for sales. I think my husband and father-in-law are relieved that they don’t have to spend hours in shopping malls as we go without them.

  • My mother-in-law nursed me back to health after the birth of my first child

I was really terrified when I was pregnant with my first child. After a difficult labour, our daughter was born. My mom lived in another province and was not well enough to travel, so my mother-in-law came to stay with us for a few weeks. She was amazing.

She helped me bath, taught me how to care for my baby but was also so gracious and allowed my husband and I space when we needed it. I will forever be grateful to her.

  • She was like a mother to me

My mother-in-law died in 2020 from Covid, and I miss her so much. She would come and stay for months at my house but never impose on our space. She could speak to me about anything, whether it was correcting me or praising me, and I would listen to whatever she said.

I could also tell her if she was wrong, and she never took offence. When my husband and I would argue, she always sided with me. I can definitely say that my mother-in-law was a mum to me. When our kids were small, she would take a taxi from Durban to Johannesburg to come and look after our children whenever we needed help. I loved her very much and miss her still.

  • My brother’s mother-in-law became his caregiver

My brother was diagnosed with a brain tumour a few years ago. He went from being a healthy father of two young children to being unable to do anything for himself within a few months. Because his wife had to go to the office during the day, his in-laws stepped in.

My brother and his young family moved in with them. His mom-in-law cared for him as though he was her own son. She fed him, read to him, helped him exercise and prayed with him. And she did it all with so much love and grace, not complaining once. Till the day he died, he was shown the most amazing love by his in-laws.
