  • Toys remain a firm favourite for kids.
  • More and more retailers are considering the opinions of little ones.
  • One local retail chain offers South African children the opportunity to decide what toys are best.

For years, American YouTube content creator Ryan Kaji enjoyed the honour of being the top YouTuber in the world with his toy review channel.

Parents enjoyed the family-friendly content, and kids enjoyed his recommendations of the latest toys and gadgets on the market.

There were also people in his fanbase who wondered how they could get in on the action, and now, South African retail giant Makro is giving South African kids a chance to see what it is like to live that life.

This week, the retail chain called for "little helpers" to assist with what it calls its "super-serious mission" to find the best toys in town.

Makro is gearing up to host its Top Rated by Kids event at its Riversands branch on Saturday, 15 July 2023.

"We are on the search for the best people to give advice on toys – kids! We’re calling kids to be part of Makro's Top-Rated by Kids campaign task team that will help us put the coolest not-yet-released toys to the ultimate test," said Katherine Madley, Vice President of Group Marketing.

"We have had great success in hosting this event in previous years, and while it is a fun experience for them, it provides us with the real insights we need from kids on what toys to choose for them."

How to get involved

A select group of 250 lucky kids between the ages of 6 and 12 will get to rate, test and play with never-seen-before toys in South Africa.

Based on the ratings provided by the children on the day, Makro will announce the top 10 toys in an official awards ceremony and simultaneously release the official Makro Toy guide ahead of the festive season period. Parents can secure a space for their children to enjoy the fun by registering their little expert online. If the application is successful, your child could be part of the Makro Top Rated by Kids experience 2023 at Makro Riversands this year. Registration is open and ends on 25 June 2023.

Do they get to keep the toys?

News24 asked Makro if the participating judges get to keep the toys, and, unfortunately, they will not keep the toys.

Makro says this is because they are new to the market and will be available later.
