  • Sustainability is a term that has been trending in the fashion industry, and celebrities are joining in.
  • Actor and filmmaker Bonnie Wright had a sustainable wedding, where she wore a 100-year-old wedding dress.
  • She and her husband also exchanged wedding rings made by Bonnie's jeweller parents.

A trend that emerged a couple of years back in an attempt to save the planet has made its way into the wedding industry. That trend is sustainability where in weddings, it can be seen in a bride wearing a dress that once belonged to another bride, repurposing old furniture as décor for the reception and using recyclable cutlery.

Actor and filmmaker Bonnie Wright took the trend to heart and had a sustainable wedding on a farm. She wore a wedding gown a 100-year-old gown.

Bonnie and her husband, Andrew Lococo, met in 2018 at a New Year's Eve party where a friend introduced them. "Unbeknownst to her, Georgia would introduce us and then marry us," Bonnie told Brides. After dating for years, they decided to get married in 2021 and asked Bonnie's parents, who are jewellery designers, to design her engagement ring. Six months later, they tied the knot at the Ecology Center, a farm owned by two good friends of the couple.

"We admire everything that the Ecology Center stands for. We loved the idea of being surrounded by bountiful growing nourishing plants as we said, 'we do'," the bride added. The couple loves the environment, and it was important for them to have a sustainable wedding.

"It was important to reflect our love for the environment and use sustainable materials instead of any single-use packaging, lean into our creativity and make things ourselves and source everything as locally and seasonable as possible."

Another sustainable part of the wedding was the bride's 100-year-old wedding gown which needed some work before she could walk down the aisle. "I knew I wanted to wear a vintage dress. There are so many beautiful dresses already out in the world full of character and story. I luckily knew of a brilliant vintage salon in Los Angeles called Happy Isles that has great taste," she said.

Bonnie adds that it only took two visits to the salon to find the dress. "It was surreal at first actually making the official decision, but it felt so right and easy." She says the dress came without an underdress and was see-through.

"The dress didn't have the original underdress with it as it had likely perished - it being 100 years old! So when I was first trying it on, it was completely see-through. It was quite funny having to imagine the underdress we would end up making for it."

The couple got married in March and wore wedding rings that Bonnie's parents made. Although the couple is all about sustainability, the bride did wear something new, her silver Prada shoes, to complete her wedding look.
