The natural reaction, well, for many of us would probably be to ululate or scream at the sight of someone wearing a ring on their ring finger.

These days, the ululation might have to be paused because wearing a diamond ring on that finger does not always mean someone is engaged or married. But dating coach Dudu Nhlabathi-Madonsela says women love diamonds, so they can spoil themselves if they want.

The reasons women buy themselves rings vary and essentially depend on preference.

Although in some families, this is forbidden as some traditions or cultural beliefs prescribe that the only ring that should be on that finger is a wedding ring.

AFFORDABILITY

"A diamond is still a girl's best friend, and if she wants it and has the money to buy one or ten, what's stopping her? Welcome to the modern world of indifferent millennials and high female earners," says Dudu.

"According to marketing research, millennials seek things that make them look and feel good, and jewellery does precisely that. So if an unmarried woman wants to dazzle in a 4-carat diamond ring, only her bank balance should stop her from purchasing it."

PEACE OF MIND

Dudu says for the sake of inner peace; some women choose to buy themselves "wedding rings" to avoid unnecessary questions. These may be questions about when they will get married.

Some women use the rings to keep attention away from themselves and avoid being 'bothered' by unwanted suitors in public.

"The question we should be asking ourselves is not why this is becoming popular [for women to buy themselves rings] but rather why we, as a society that has fought so hard to emancipate the female, still get puzzled by such actions?

"Is the woman choosing to gift herself with the object of desire, be it a big car, house, or ring, not a by-product of what we stood and fought for? A little girl does not have to get married to secure her future; now, she can delay marriage or avoid it altogether."
