  • A wedding is usually expected to have a little bit of drama. From rude body-shaming comments and fighting about the menu to family members who want to bring plus threes, there's never a dull moment.
  • For one Reddit bride-to-be her parents were the major cause of drama while planning her big day.
  • They chose to get their "money" back from family members for whom they'd previously bought gifts by trying to control the guest list so that they can get as many gifts as possible.
  • Here is her story as shared on the platform.

Taking to Reddit to vent, the anonymous bride began the story with the revelation of what she means by her parents trying to collect off her wedding. “By collecting, I mean, every wedding, communion, confirmation and graduation party where they had to give a gift they’ve been tallying over the years,” she says.

She continues to add that her parents think all the family members owe them money they’ve shelled out and will get it back at her wedding. “They expect me to invite distant family members, their personal friends, and neighbours I’ve never even talked to for more than 10 minutes in my life. All because they had to go to theirs and give a gift,” she says.

The Reddit user continued to say she had a phone call conversation with her mother and her mother told her about an invitation she received from the neighbours for a baby shower.

“I light-heartedly made a joke that they already collected on those neighbours going to my graduation party. And she was like, ‘oh no, we didn’t. They are going to be invited to your wedding too'," shares the frustrated bride. "I told her no. That people don’t give gifts to get something in return.”

While the anonymous bride-to-be was on the phone with her mother, her father overheard the conversation and told her she had no choice, but she still refused. “I want a small intimate wedding with 50 people at most. Our friends. Our immediate family. Not people I see on holiday once every year or two," the bride shares.

"That’s not to be malicious or hurtful. I’m not worried about money and gifts. I literally can’t wait to be married to my fiancé, and I want people who are active in our day to day lives to be present.”

Despite being firm with her parents the bride still wanted advice from fellow Reddit users on whether her decision is terrible as it is damaging her relationship with her parents as an only child.

Redditors rushed to the comment section in her defence with one saying, “It’s a pretty simple rule. The people who get to decide who goes to the wedding are the people whose wedding it is.”

Another added, “Your wedding is about you two, not your parents. And seeing it is as an opportunity to collect is just gross. I picture your parents with a spreadsheet of what they are owed from each person. Stand your ground. Don’t JADE. No is a complete sentence. And if your parents can’t accept it, they don’t have to attend.”
