An old wives' tale: The shocking 'reason' why you shouldn't wear red at a wedding

accreditation
  • When it comes to weddings, many rules come with being a guest.
  • From what you are allowed to wear to what you can gift the newlywed couple.
  • Other than white, red is another colour you shouldn't wear as a guest.

This past weekend South Africa has been talking about one major event: the wedding of Sisa and Ayanda Ngebulana. The couple had a star-studded guestlist, including some of Mzansi's loved TV personalities, Minnie Dlamini, Sinazo Masina, Sarah Langa and Sorisha Naidoo.

Taking place in a lavish castle in Paris, France, the couple had all their female guests wear one shade of red that was bright and popping. They also had their female guests standing in front of the aisle showcasing their ensembles.

Although the guests looked stunning, wearing red as wedding guests is usually a no-go, and the same goes for wearing white. Wedding planners Georgie Mitchell and Bethany Smith, based in the UK, took to TikTok to share a clip of their podcast, The Unfiltered Bride, telling viewers about the shocking reason you shouldn't wear red as a guest to a wedding.

Mitchell then explained the shocking reason behind not wearing red at a wedding: "Red means you slept with the groom." Mitchell said this is an Old Wives' Tale, but many believe it. The wedding planners continued to explain the modern meaning behind wearing a red dress, saying, "Red can be seen as quite sexy, a bit 'look at me' and naughty."

Followers of the pair took to their comment section to share what the colour means in their cultures, with one saying, "My mom told me the no-go colours for a wedding guest in the UK are white, black, red and navy." Another added that "Red means luck, joy or happiness" in some cultures."
