‘She tested positive for Covid and still wanted to have the wedding’ - weddings that ended friendships

A bride's big day is something truly special, but just some just go way too far to make it ‘perfect.’

Here are stories from bridesmaids who ended their friendships with the brides.

‘She had Covid-19 but still wanted to get married’

Nina Smith, 38, says a friend of hers nearly died of Covid last year but is healthy again. She was asked to be someone’s bridesmaid, but two days before the wedding, the bride tested positive for Covid. “The bride told the guests that they were going to go ahead with the wedding anyway, but my friend, the bridesmaid, said she wasn’t going, and now they’re not talking.”

‘She was my best friend, but now we don’t talk’

“This is the tale of how I became a shiny lime green asparagus,” says Danielle Brown, 34. “So, my best friend since we were about 10 is the first of our friend group to get married."

Danielle says that her friend didn’t want to be a bad bride, but that didn’t pan out too well.  “She asks her three bridesmaids for input on colour schemes, fabric choice, dress styles, hairstyles. All of us are heavy-breasted women, so we say ‘anything is fine as long as it isn’t strapless’ because we’d like to be able to wear bras.”

The bride had a smaller chest and was self-conscious that dresses that weren’t strapless would draw too much attention to the bridesmaids. “She chooses strapless, lime green satin gowns after promising all of us halter neck olive green dresses. Each of us had to pay R600 for monstrosities. She also insisted that we all have updo hairstyles even though none of us had hair long enough to pull that off neatly,” says Danielle.

“It’s been about 15 years since her wedding, and I still refuse to wear anything green again, and I haven’t spoken to her since.”

‘She tried to tell me what to do with my money’

Thandi Farmer, 30, met her former colleague in 2016, and they became fast friends. They even lived together for a while when the colleague needed a place to stay. They drifted apart and then became close again after working in different offices and then reuniting.

“We then both chose to relocate to Johannesburg when the Cape Town offices closed down, and that made us even closer. Eventually, she got engaged and started wedding planning. She had her bridesmaids and everything all picked out,” says Thandi, who was going through a break-up at the time and not keen on the idea of weddings and marriage.

“Some of her bridal team let her down, and she asked me to please MC her wedding. Not long after that, she asked me to be a replacement bridesmaid as well. I agreed because I didn’t want her to feel bad. I was then only told I would need to pay for my dress as well as contribute towards funding her bachelorette party.” 

But that’s when things changed. “I had a dress that fitted her theme, and she was okay with it after seeing it and then abruptly changed her mind after that. I told her this was not an expense I could afford on such short notice, with her wedding being less than a month away. She then said she'd pay for my dress, but I would need to refund her.”

Thandi had been planning to get a tattoo done that same month and posted a story of her new art, but her former colleague was not happy.

“She just blew a gasket with me, saying that I waste my money on tattoos and things, and I could have used that money for her wedding. I told her that she had no right to tell me what to do with the money that I work for and that I was merely helping her out with her wedding due to other people bailing on her. I felt disrespected and decided to block her, and we haven't spoken since.”
