  • Some brides believe that bridesmaids shouldn't pay a cent.
  • Others want their bridesmaids to help out by paying for their shoes and dress.
  • This bride wants her bridesmaids to pay upwards of R100 000, which includes a pre-wedding vacation.

There has been an ongoing debate regarding whether or not bridesmaids should contribute to a wedding that isn't theirs. Some brides have specifically said their bridesmaids won't pay a cent as they are the ones who asked them to be part of their big day. Others are against this opinion as they feel they have so much to pay for already, so they ask them to chirp in to minimise costs. However, this bride took it too far by asking her bridesmaids to pay upwards of R100 000, enough money to have your own wedding.

Calling in on an Australian evening radio show called, Smallzy's Surgery, a woman named Grace spoke to the host and shared why she had to decline an offer to be a bridesmaid after she was told to pay AU$10 000 (R122 000). "My drama focused more around finances. The bridal drama was that it was a AU$10 000 package to be involved in the wedding." As the hosts were taken aback, they allowed the woman to continue sharing. "It was all of the pre-events," she added before listing what the AU$10 000 entailed.

"So, there was the $250 (R3 000) a head bridal shower with her mom and all her aunties; there was a $500 (R6 100) bachelorette party, there was a pre-wedding holiday.... and spa weekend and the destination wedding itself in Bali." After discovering all the money she had to pay, she declined. "At that point, I graciously stepped away and said, 'Look, you deserve somebody to give you the wedding of your dreams. Me and my tax bracket, I'm not that girl. I'm so sorry. Peace out; love you. Have a great time'."

When the host asked how the bride took the news, she said, "To be fair to her credit. She actually took it pretty well. I think I did it in a tactful enough way that she didn't hate me. But no, we aren't friends. We like each other's posts on Instagram, and that's about it." She also explained that she met the bride when she was in private school and was surprised to have been chosen as a bridesmaid. "Now let me preface this by saying I was on scholarship. I was that kid in hand-me-downs. I bought my own car and this doll rocking up in daddy's Mercedes," she added.
