Daniel Popper sculpts harmony between humans and nature with his larger-than-life work

By: Kaunda Selisho

When festivalgoers enter the Corona Sunsets Festival World Tour at the Glen Country Club in Clifton, Cape Town next weekend, they will be greeted by an awe-inspiring sight: "Nature's Goddess," a monumental sculpture crafted by the renowned South African artist Daniel Popper.

This five-metre-high wooden marvel brings Popper's unique vision and profound connection with art and the environment to life.

Born in Johannesburg, Popper's journey into the world of sculpture began with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (with distinction in Oil Painting) from the renowned Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town in 2006.

Beyoncé goes cowboycore with new album heavy on Texas roots

By: Maggy Donaldson

Beyoncé has been a showbiz fixture for nearly three decades, shapeshifting from girl group lead and pop empress to Hollywood actor and business mogul. But for all the caps she's worn, the Houston-bred megastar's cowboy hat has stayed within reach: Queen Bey has always been country.

Now she's firmly entering her yeehaw era: Cowboy Carter, the second act of her Renaissance project, which dropped on Friday at midnight.

Cape Town hat maker Crystal Birch to open new store in Joburg with new Wild West inspired collection

By: Phumi Ramalepe

World-renowned hatmaker and brand Crystal Birch recently announced that she would open a new store in Johannesburg, bringing customers a new collection, titled A:Head.

The Cape Town-based company specialises in creating and crafting head pieces, including fedoras, cowboy hats, straw hats, berets, beanies and other elaborate hats for various occasions. The Johannesburg store at 44 Stanley will open on 6 April 2024, offering customers easy access to the milliner's latest collection.

According to Birch, the A:Head Collection, aimed at fostering sustainability and showcasing the brand's artisanship, was inspired by the rugged landscapes and free-spirited nature of the Wild West, with each hat exuding a unique personality and style.

Among the pieces are ones named Hunter, Willow, Rodeo and Ziggy. Perfect for Beyonce fans who want to get into the Cowboy Carter spirit.

Chef Zakhele Ndlozi of Taste Master SA fame shares cooking secrets and a yummy Easter must-try

By: Lauren Klaasen

Although Ndlozi began his official journey into hospitality after high school, studying hospitality management at Central Johannesburg College and food preparation and culinary arts at Capsicum Culinary Studio, it was his mother, Sibongile, who inspired him from a young age.

"I remember eating plain cooked rice, which was the first dish she would cook before the others were ready. I still enjoy a bowl of plain rice to this day – the building block of a delicious meal," he said.

Growing up between Alberton and Soweto, Ndlozi cherishes the memory of the smell of freshly baked banana loaf permeating the home while watching TV with friends.

Today, the former contestant of The Taste Master SA season 3 has risen through the ranks at Sun International after starting as a chef de partie in 2016 at The Maslow in Sandton and as a specialist Asian chef working at Time Square Casino in Pretoria a year later.

Social media forces British royal family to adapt

By: Véronique Dupont

Britain's royal family has been forced to radically change the way it communicates because of social media, after speculation ran riot about the health of Catherine, Princess of Wales.

The 42-year-old princess, widely known as Kate, last week announced that she was receiving cancer treatment, two months after having abdominal surgery. Her video statement, posted on Instagram, was a radical departure from the royal family's reputed mantra of "never complain, never explain".

But it has been seen as much-needed given the frenzied speculation and wild conspiracy theories circulating online.

6 events that let you run or cycle through nature reserves like Timbavati and Serengeti

By: Andrew Thompson

Crazy as it may sound, there’s an increasingly busy calendar of sporting events taking place in exotic places, which, under normal circumstances, require guests to remain in vehicles or at least be accompanied by armed rangers.

For one, or sometimes a few days, per year, these events allow you to run or ride through reserves and protected parks where animals roam free on tropically dense trails.

If you prefer holidays that favour the active over the sloth, these six events on the African continent are worth signing up for.

REVIEW | 3 Body Problem is mind-bending sci-fi that leaves much to be desired: Much like the source material, new Netflix series about Chinese author Liu Cixin's novel The Three-Body Problem has also proven to be a hit with audiences. The show is undeniably entertaining but is riddled with flaws in its writing and direction. It clumsily tries to deliver sharp commentary on topics like religion, philosophy, politics, humanity, science, etc. But instead of being genuinely intelligent, the show feels more like a shallow spectacle.

Wine 101 | Colombar(d): From Brandy to Fine Wine: "We chase lost causes." - Manie Libbok, Chasing the Sun Season Two.

That statement is so quintessentially South African it put a knot in my throat, and yet, it comes with some distinct disclaimers. i.e. Not in reference to toxic partners, the Post Office, SA railways, and certain political parties, you also need to know when a lost cause is, in fact, lost. But there are things. Like the Springboks' series of seemingly impossible wins this past World Cup. The grape Colombar(d) has a strange affiliation with rugby as one of the main components to making brandy (Cognac in France), which, if you've spent any time at all in a South African sports bar, rugby stadium, household, you'll know that brandy and coke is the drink of the people. Which then also explains why it remains one of the top three planted white grape varieties in South Africa, with 9 592.19 ha under vine at last count (SaWis2022).

Originally from Gascony in southwestern France, Colombard is a cross between Gouais Blanc and Chenin Blanc, thus of the Chenin Blanc family and fitting for South Africa.
