Of all the things for a quaint town like Hoedspruit to be proud of - its access to famous Big 5 nature reserves, the Blyde River Canyon and a burgeoning regional airport, for starters - it seems strange that many residents gloat about something it doesn't have - a traffic light.

For many years, Hoedspruit has clung to its small-town charm. Quirky restaurants serving hearty fare paired with adventurous conservation tales, the absence of a large mall, and occasional visits from warthogs bumbling through its petrol station forecourt.

Unlike other Lowveld towns that also serve as gateways to the Kruger National Park, Hoedspruit has yet to explode - and may never. Rather than industry and mining forcing a scarring sprawl, pristine nature reserves teeming with wildlife ensure it remains hemmed in.
