On the morning of 24 February, the Miami-headquartered Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) sent emails to 2 279 passengers dotted across the island of Mauritius waiting to board the Norwegian Dawn ship back to Cape Town later that day.
This email was the first indication of a seemingly minor complication that would, within hours, become a global-headline-making headache for the cruise company.
"Due to a last-minute decision made by local government officials, your embarkation date has tentatively changed to Tuesday, 27 February 2024," the email read.
