It may seem hard to believe now, but there was once a time not so long ago when passengers had to turn off all electronic devices - cellphones included - while on board an aeroplane for the duration of the flight.
What people did during their two hours in the air between Joburg and Cape Town, outside of the 30 seconds of polite small talk and a quick flip through the inflight magazine, is now difficult to remember.
Eventually, laws adapted to allow passengers to use portable electronic devices while in motion, provided they were powered off for take-off and landing. And then, more recently, for the entire time - provided they're on flight mode.
