A not-so-new trend is sweeping through social media, and it’s the use of crystal deodorant over traditional deodorants and antiperspirants, which is seemingly a viable alternative since it is void of chemicals and plastic waste.

Crystal deodorants, also known as deodorant stones, offer a natural substitute to conventional deodorants and antiperspirants typically found in stores, as they are crafted from mineral crystals like potassium alum or potassium aluminium sulphate.

These crystals, containing salt known for water purification, are believed to possess antimicrobial properties that combat the bacteria responsible for unpleasant odours, all without synthetic fragrances or aluminium.

This TikTok craze has seen users flocking to purchase the product merely due to its viral status on the platform, with brands such as Salt & Stone, Thai, and Lafe’s, among others, increasing its popularity. But what exactly drives this hype?

Unlike standard deodorants and antiperspirants, stone deodorants have natural ingredients such as antibacterial oils like coconut or tea tree, baking soda for sweat prevention, and essential oils for fragrance. Their chemical-free composition makes them cruelty-free and vegan-friendly.

Despite their raw, mineral stone appearance, crystal deodorants have properties that prevent bacteria growth and odour without leaving the chalky residue common with roll-on deodorants that can leave unpleasant stains on dark clothes.

Environmentally friendly

With the deodorant industry being marred by sustainability and waste concerns, crystal deodorants are an environmentally friendly alternative.

Various TikTok users have reviewed the product, with many citing that they prefer it over typical deo because it doesn’t have a scent at all, which is perfect for those who want their perfume to stand out.

One TikTok user ditched ordinary deo for the crystal alternative and reviewed the natural product positively.

She explained that after coming across the product on TikTok, she was initially sceptical but bought it for under $10 (R189). She was amazed that it worked better than the collection of antiperspirants she had been using, some of which left her sweaty and a little stinky.    

“If you have not tried it, try it. I am done with the deodorants,” she said. “I don’t want to put this stuff on me anymore. Apparently, it’s not that great for you anyways, so I’m just going to keep using this because it works, and I love it when something finally works.”
