I first remember suffering from intense period pain when I was in my early 20s. I was on a family trip to Zanzibar. Our final day on the island had arrived, and my mother, brother and father decided to spend it soaking up the sun alongside a swimming pool at one of the local resorts.

But I was trapped in bed with unimaginable cramps. I remember my family seeming a little disappointed that I would not join in the fun, trying their best to convince me that it would be worth it - but to no avail.
