  • The concept of spring cleaning has evolved; it's no longer about hard cleaning labour.
  • Now, you can just add a few elements to "enhance the feeling of seasonal change" without going broke.
  • You can also use smart cleaning devices to do all the hard work for you.

Spring is upon us, and dare I say, 'finally' after the cold winter. Flowers have bloomed, and it's time to do some spring cleaning around your house and remove that August dust.

Although cleaning may not be the most exciting thing to do, it might be helpful to introduce new techniques, products and cleaning equipment to help ease the cleaning process. Spring cleaning also doesn't necessarily mean cleaning every corner of your house.

It can also mean updating a few items around your house to give it a fresh look. Here are tips to help keep your home fresh and clean this spring without costing you too much money.

We live in a time where everything is 'smart', from cellphones, TVs, and self-driving cars to homes. Even though South Africa is still years away from smart houses with smart cleaning devices.

However, director of Solenco Trevor Brewer says it is closer than we think. "Turning your home into a smart home is no longer a futuristic idea – the smart home market is growing rapidly all over the world. In South Africa, homeowners are moving quickly towards installing cutting-edge technology to make their lives easier, healthier and more energy-efficient," he says.

According to Mr Price Home's Phethile Mtshali, cleaning and rejuvenating your house shouldn't cost you an arm and a leg.

"There are plenty of small ways to bring light, colour and vibrance into your home that can enhance the feeling of seasonal change without breaking the bank. It’s all about being creative and exciting the senses."

Phethile shared some simple ways you can integrate into your home, like introducing bold prints and adding accessories such as new vases, colourful art and a new scent in your diffuser.

Phethile's five tips to rejuvenating your house:

1. Lighten up

Replace heavy drapes and curtains with lighter-weight options in softer tones or even bold florals. In areas where you want sun, switch to voiles or linens to let in natural light. The same goes for your bedding. Pack away the cosy winter downs and bring out your lighter fabrics in soft hues or bold, bright colours and florals to bring new life to your sleeping space.

2. Brighten up

Add pops of bright colour wherever you can to give your home a burst of spring joy. Bring in colourful accessories like vases, catchall trays, planters, throws or cushions and place them in areas that feel dull. Create your own unique display spaces using items like colourful glasses and table settings, fresh flowers, mirrors and art.

3. Go wild

Spring is the ideal time to go wild with bold florals, botanical prints and accessories. A botanical tablecloth, throw cushions, or even dishcloths can uplift and bring a fresh, natural element to any room. Add fresh indoor plants and greenery, or change up your planters for something quirky and eye-catching.

4. Change the scene

Consider switching out old wall art for a fresh and vibrant piece as the season changes. Look for prints that inspire and delight your senses and give you a sense of warmth. Consider updating your photos and frames, too, taking the chance to use more recent pics that spark joy for you.

5. Refresh your senses

Aim to delight all your senses when you are rejuvenating your space. Add a new diffuser with a fresh, uplifting scent or floral-scented candles. Add new hand soaps and creams in your bathrooms with delicious floral aromas and designs that cue nature's splendour.

When you're done rejuvenating your house and are thinking of using smart devices, there's an option to use a smart vacuum cleaner like the Solenco Hobot Legee D7 for instance.

However, Brewer suggests you do your research before purchasing any smart home cleaning devices. Brewer says you should note "what data is used, where that data is stored and if the company has any liabilities to you as a user of that information."

"You will also need to ensure that the brand or company supplying you is a trusted brand/company in the market," he adds.
