David Trafford of De Trafford Winery up on the slopes of the Helderberg is one of the most unassuming pioneers you've ever met. He has this quiet rambling way of speaking.

I am always struck by the sheer gravity of the things he says and, moreover, the things he does. A "monopole" is a French term referring to an appellation or winegrowing region entirely controlled or represented by one winery, and Malgas, previously undiscovered or even designated until David and Rita Trafford found it in 2000 while undertaking a holiday on the banks of the Breede River, 15 km away from the Atlantic Ocean, is such a place.
