Local Community Policing Forums (CPF) unanimously said something needs to be done to curb crime in their areas before it gets too late.
Based on the recent provincial quarterly crime statistics that were released by the provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Thembisile Patekile, on Thursday 22 February at Gugulethu Police Barracks in Gugulethu, CPFs said there is a long way to go. The statistics foccused in the period between October 2023 to December 2023.
In terms of the figures, Mfuleni Police Station is leading in the province with 80 murder cases, from 89 during the same period in 2022.
While the number is down, the station has the second highest murder cases in the country.
It is followed closely by Gugulethu Police Station in the province and third place nationally with 73 cases reported from 50 cases in the previous year, an increase of 23 cases.
Nyanga is in third position in the province and in fourth place nationally with 73 cases reported from 68 cases in the previous year, it has increased with five cases.
Khayelitsha Police Station is in position four in the province with 70 murder cases reported from 40 cases in the previous year and is increased with 30 cases. It is in position five nationally.
Khayelitsha CPF chair Monde Bambelo stated that there are a lot of factors that had an impact in the rising of the cases reported in this period.
He highlighted extortion and taxi related violence as some of them. However, he stated that they need to revive the community structures to curb crime.
He stated that police alone cannot fight crime.
“We need to revive our street committees, neighbourhood watch and all other relevant structures. We need to stop fighting each other, sometimes these structures become dysfunctional because of the infights,” said Bambelo. He urged the officers to get rid of guns in the communities.
“There’s a lot of guns out there. People are carrying guns in public. We need a campaign where the officers will clean everything. The officers need to confiscate all those guns,” he stated.
Nyanga CPF Dumisani Qwebe said crime is getting out of hand in the area. He reiterated Bambiso’s sentiments that taxi related violence and extortion played a major role in the escalating of numbers. “Browns Farm is one of the dangerous areas in the precinct. But, we are trying to intervene even though the taxi related wars and extortion have a major impact. We are calling the community not to give up,” said Qwebe, adding that they are going back to the drawing board again to strategise against the criminals.
