The case of the alleged killer of the Gugulethu Community Policing Forum (CPF) deputy chair has been postponed to April for his next appearance. The suspect appeared at Athlone Magistrates’ Court in Athlone on Thursday 22 February.

Lulama “Guffy” Dinginto was shot and killed in her home at NY 110 in December last year. (“Community on tenterhooks over the murder of Gugulethu CPF chair, Lulama Dinginto”, City Vision, 16 December 2023).

The man was arrested towards the end of the year on a bus in Graaff-Reinet. He was reportedly travelling from Gqeberha to Cape Town. He appeared in court briefly and has been in custody ever since.

During the media briefing of quarterly provincial crime statistics that held at Gugulethu Police Barracks in Gugulethu on Thursday 22 February, provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Thembisile Patekile said Dinginto's murder case was postponed to April. "It is a coincidence that we hold the media briefing here in Gugulethu about crime statistics today,” he said, “the same day Guffy’s alleged killer is appearing in court. The case has been postponed to Thursday 4 April. The suspect is still in custody."

Provincial CPF chair Fransina Lukas said her group won't relax until the suspect is sentenced. She said they want to see him rot in jail. "We want justice for Guffy. We want to see the judges finalising the case and sentencing the suspect. We want a maximum sentence imposed on him."
