“Working hard and focusing on my studies are what made me to be where I’m today” are the words of former Manzomthombo Secondary High School learner in Mfuleni, Inga Mhlauli.

The 18-year-old passed his matric last year with flying colours.

He obtained seven distinctions including 98% for Maths and 89% in both English and Physical Science.

Mhlauli was one of the learners who attended the Engen Maths and Science School (EMSS) at Manzimthombo.

He was among the top learners that were honoured by Engen during the award ceremony held at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) Bellville Campus on Saturday 24 February.

Mhlauli, who is registered for medicine at the University of Cape Town (UCT), said he is excited about the future. “I’m excited and looking forward to the future. Honestly, I didn’t expect to get 98% in Maths. Ja, I was expecting above 90% but not 98%. The Engen Maths and Science programme helped me a lot. I don’t regret attending their classes,” he said.

Mhlauli stated that he is about to achieve his dream. He vowed to work hard to make his family proud.

“For now, I’m still finding my feet. I will settle soon. Your background doesn’t determine your destination. The fact that I am coming from Mfuleni doesn’t stop me from being who I want to be in life,” he said.

The soft-spoken Mhlauli said he joined the EMSS in 2021when he was in Grade 10. He encouraged other learners to join the programme. “When you are attending these programmes it’s like you are doing a revision. Because you have a chance to get clarity on a particular subject.

“Whatever was taught at school they repeat it in Saturday classes,” explained Mhlauli.

Engen has ten centres around the country including Cape Town (classes are held at Cape Peninsula University of Technology and Manzomthombo High), Eastern Cape (East London, Cala, and Gqeberha), Johannesburg (Zakariyya Park Combined School), and KwaZulu-Natal (at Fairvale High School, Ganges High School, Hillview High School, and Umlazi Commercial High School).

The programme focuses on providing extra tuition in gateway subjects such as mathematics and science as well as English.
