Lungile Anthony Madolo, the man accused of killing Lulama “Guffy” Dinginto, will remain in custody until Thursday 4 April, for now.

The 35-year-old appeared in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 22 February after being arrested in Graff Reinet on a bus travelling from Gqeberha to Cape Town towards the end of last year.

He made two brief appearances in court late last year and early this year and has been in custody since then.

Dinginto was shot and killed at her home in NY 110 in December last year (“Community on tenterhooks” City Vision, 16 Dec).

During a media briefing to unpack the quarterly provincial crime statistics at Gugulethu Police Barracks on Thursday 22 February, provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Thembisile Patekile confirmed the postponement. “It is a coincidence that we hold the media briefing here in Gugulethu about crime statistics today, the same day Guffy’s alleged killer is appearing in court. The case has been postponed to Thursday 4 April. He (suspect) is still in custody,” said Patekile.

Western Cape Community Policing Forum (CPF) chair Fransina Lukas said they will not relax until the suspect is sentenced. She said they want to see Madolo rot in jail. “We want justice for Guffy. We want to see the judges finalising the case and sentencing the suspect. We want the maximum sentence to be imposed on him,” said Lukas.

She appealed for a speedy resolution of the matter to ensure justice for all their members who died in the line of duty. “We want the officers to pull up their socks and arrest all the criminals who kill our members. One of our members, Nobuhle Sopuwa from Phillippi, was shot and killed while she was doing the washing in her house (“Nyanga Community Forum vows to fight on after murder of secretary”, City Vision, 11 Jan) and still the culprits are roaming on the streets. We want them to be brought to book. We want to see action,” said Lukas.

She urged all CPF members to be vigilant while on duty.
