The Nyanga Community Policing Forum (CPF) is appealing for more police officers to curb crime in the area and for the police to leave no stone unturned in bringing police attackers to book. Police officers came under attack while patrolling in Browns Farm on Thursday 8 March.
One perpetrator was shot dead and the other was seriously injured, while an unknown woman was caught in a crossfire. The injured people were rushed to hospital.
Nyanga CPF secretary Dumisani Qwebe urged the government to deploy more officers in the precinct. He said crime was rife in the area.
“The officers apparently were patrolling in the vicinity when a group of people in a vehicle opened fire on them and officers retaliated,” he pointed out, and one of the culprits died on the scene.
The perpetrators are believed to be part of a group of extortionists terrorising the area.
Qwebe said they were at war not only with the community but with the officers as well. “We need manpower. We need special forces to eradicate this extortion. We are living in fear because we are not safe.”
City Vision contacted provincial police to confirm the incident, but was referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), which had not yet responded by the time of going to print.
