Mawande Jara, CEO of Zibonele FM, the Khayelitsha community radio station, was shot and injured in a house robbery at his house in Zone 14, Makhaza on Sunday.

Radio Zibonele personality and chief executive officer Mawande Jara is recovering at home after narrowly escaping death.

He was shot and injured during a house robbery at his home in Zone 14 in Makhaza on Sunday 7 February. He was allegedly shot and his left arm wounded while trying to flee.

Jara was discharged from hospital on Monday morning, 8 February.

In a statement, Zibonele management stated two robbers had entered Jara’s premises, one with a firearm.

“On entering the premises they forced him to lie down while they ransacked the house looking for valuables,” it said. “While the criminals were busy dismantling the television set from the wall in his bedroom he managed to escape. Alerted to it they shot him from the back as he was fleeing, and the bullet caught his left arm and grazed his chest muscle.”

However, Jara managed to raise alarm in the neighbourhood and was rushed to hospital, where he was treated and discharged on Monday.

The criminals made off with two flat screen television sets, two cellphones and a wallet among other things.

Harare community policing forum (CPF) chair Funeka Soldaat described the incident as sad and shocking.

She called on the law to take its course.

“Jara is an activist in the community of Khayelitsha. He has dedicated his life to uplifting the community. As the CPF we believe the police officers will do their best to arrest the perpetrators.”

Soldaat lambasted the lifting of the ban on sales of alcohol, saying it contributed to an increase in crime.

Harare police spokesperson Capt Siyabulela Vukubi said the police are investigating a case of attempted murder and house robbery.

“The incident took place on Sunday at approximately 20:30,” he said, “when two unknown armed suspects entered the residence. They shot the victim once in the chest and took two flat screen televisions, two cellphones and a wallet.”
