Hip-hop artists from Lwandle, Nomzamo and surrounding areas came under one roof on Saturday 2 October to revive their love for live music performance in an event dubbed “Get2gether”.
The artists shared a stage at Fezeka Day Care Centre in Nomzamo and the support was there for all to see.
They say they want to share a stage as young artists and maybe one day may also have a famous individual coming out of their own township.
The artists believe if townships such as Soweto in Gauteng and Umlazi in Durban are known for producing well-known musicians they too can achieve that feat.
They say talent is in abundance in the area, and all it needs is nurturing.
Athenkosi Sobekwa, the event’s organiser, said it created a platform for artists of the area to showcase their talent.
“We came up with this idea of a show where it can be easily accessible to all those that love music,” he said.
“It is amazing that we had so many people, with only our own artist featuring in this event. We are building something here for all the [hip-hop] artists of this area. The interest shown by those who attended shows that young people of Strand are longing for entertainment and express themselves in the way they know how.”
Sobekwa said he hoped such an event would become a monthly or quarterly one in future. He said Facebook was being used as the main social network for interaction and connecting with a lot of young people from the Strand area.
Elvis Qondile, an artist mostly known as “Young M Beats”, said around 40 artists shared the stage on the day.
“There’s a lot of talent here in Strand and young people really love this genre of music,” he said. “With these kind of shows we want to buy our own music equipment that can be used by people of this area.”
