Two drivers and their passengers survived unharmed after an accident on one of the busiest roads in Bloemfontein this morning, 18 March. The accident involved a white Polo and a gold Toyota Fortuner which, after spinning, landed on its side on the ground.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Markgraaff Street and Nelson Mandela Drive. The accident reportedly happed around 06:10. Traffic was diverted to alternative routes while traffic officers and the police were busy with preliminary investigations.

The incident left the Polo, with a Northern Cape registration, beyond repair. According to an eyewitness, the driver of the Fortuner (with a Free State registration number) was travelling with two children, and the Polo driver with a male passenger.

It is unclear what led to the collision. According to an eyewitness, the traffic lights were functioning properly at the time, and there was no load shedding to blame as the possible cause.

One of the visibly shocked eyewitnesses reacted by saying: “It’s a lucky escape for everyone in both vehicles.” The Polo’s bonnet appeared damaged beyond repair as oil and water were dripping onto the ground.
