Former Union High School learner Matthew Basson, who matriculated last year, has been awarded the Rupert Achievement Award for being the top matriculant in Graaff-Reinet for 2022.
In addition to receiving the Rupert Achievement Award, his hard work has seen him being one of only a few 2022 matriculants nationwide to be awarded the Ninety One Changeblazers Bursary.
The bursary is awarded annually to hard working, talented and motivated young people with big ambition to help them realise their dreams.
Adding to this, Basson was also selected as one of the recipients of the Rupert Bursary Fund.
Boasting six distinctions, and an average of 85%, the inspiring 2022 head boy of Union High School started his school career at Union Pre-School, Graaff-Reinet in 2008 at age four.
Basson has been one of the top three academic achievers since grade 5 in 2015, and right on top for the last three in grades 10, 11 and 12.
He received the Dux Student award and was awarded full colours in grade 11 based on his grade 10 results and then re-awarded the same accolade in grade 12 for his excellent performance in grade 11.
At the school’s final prizegiving ceremony of 2022, he raked in the awards, ranging from top student of the year and the highest achievement in physical sciences, mathematics, Afrikaans, English, and history, to the general knowledge prize and the prize as the grade 11 and 12 learner living out his Christian faith by showing goodwill and tolerance to all.
Apart from academics, Basson represented his school at cricket and was in the swimming team sharing the men’s captaincy throughout the year.
In addition to being head boy, he was actively involved in starting the school’s very successful mentorship programme, as well as bi-weekly prayer meetings at school.
Basson achieved full colours for leadership and culture, as well as a merit award for choir.
This year he is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Psychology and Sociology at the University of Cape Town.
