An 18-year-old girl who lives in a Komani informal settlement amazed the district when she topped the matric pass rate with six distinctions.
Speaking to Komani-Karoo Express at Nkwanca High School, Esihle Beyile said she was excited about her results.
"When I started grade 11, I realised that I had to apply myself while learning. I'm happy with the attention I'm getting and I'm hoping to use it to influence other young people to have a positive outlook on life," she said.
Beyile obtained 89% in history, 92% in tourism, and 93% in geography.
Furthermore, she got 95% in mathematical literacy, 90% in life orientation, 86% in Xhosa, and 76% in English.
Beyile, who lives in a shack with her mom, aunt, and sister, has been accepted to study a Bachelor of Law and she has received the MEC of education's bursary.
"Learners should listen to their teachers because they know best. Be committed to your studies and stay away from drugs and alcohol," she said.
School principal Nkosinathi Mbutuma said he was proud of Beyile's achievement.
"She did not allow her background to limit her. This is my message, that learners must rise above their circumstances," said Mbutuma.
He further said learners need to stay focused.
