Two police officials were each released on R500 bail at the Graaff-Reinet Magistrate's Court on January 18, after facing charges of theft and possession of suspected stolen property worth R1 million.
According to police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, the arrest of the officers followed a week-long investigation by a team of detectives from the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit.
He said that on January 18, at about 06:00, the team who had search warrants, searched the homes of the two police officials.
Nkohli said that the suspects, Warrant Officer Johannes Gerber and Warrant Officer Lawrence Plaatjies performed duties at the Stock Theft and Endangered Species unit in Graaff-Reinet.
“Police recovered state property estimated to be valued over R1 million,” said Nkohli.
“Among the items that were found were sets of brand-new tyres, freezer, fridge, and diesel generators.”
After being released on bail on January 18, their case was postponed to February 23.
