Earlier today, September 17, the body of an elderly man was found washed ashore at the Seekoei River causeway between Paradise Valley and Aston Bay while a skull was washed ashore at Supertubes Beach in Jeffreys Bay.

According to police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, the body of a white man, approximately 68 years old was found washed ashore this morning, September 17, at the Seekoei River causeway between Paradise Valley and Aston Bay.

“Police suspect that he may have drowned due to the heavy freak waves that lashed during yesterday,” said Naidu.

She said that the man is known to the police, however, the next of kin must be traced and informed.

In a separate incident, Naidu said that at about 09:45 this morning, September 17, while curious onlookers were watching the huge, fierce waves at Supertubes beach in Jeffreys Bay, a skull was washed ashore.

She said that an inquest docket had been opened.

The NSRI in Jeffreys Bay has issued a storm surge update to appeal to the public in Jeffreys Bay to use extreme caution today, September 17, around the water, with the next 1.94m high tide predicted at 17:00.

“Due to the storm surge, and shoreline that is drenched from this morning's high tide, it is predicted that surge may cause more damage in the afternoon,” the statement said.

“Large waves will continue to break as swell subsides throughout the day, and the public is cautioned not to walk on the beaches between low and high tide especially where there are high dunes, as it is very possible to be swept off balance by surge from large waves.”

“Please also use caution with damaged boardwalk structures standing on dunes that may become unstable and collapse.”

The statement further said that Aston Bay Causeway was closed for traffic and pedestrian traffic as it is considered a high-risk area.

“We do not advise the public to use it for the next 24 hours, especially during times close to high tide,” the statement said.

"Our Jeffreys Bay crew is on high alert and we are doing proactive patrols during the day.”

The emergency contact number for the NSRI in Jeffreys Bay is 079 916 0390.
