André Martinez (35), a resident from Aston Bay, recently travelled to Los Angeles for the World Championship of Performing Arts, a worldwide talent Olympics.
Here 72 countries sent the best-of-the-best to perform in singing, dancing, acting, instrumental acts, variety acts and modelling.
Team South Africa travelled to the competition on July 24, where they spent the first few days preparing for the Parade of Nations Ceremony at Disneyland. Team South Africa went all out on a Lion King theme, and won Best Costume Design and Best Performance, out of all the countries who represented.
In between the competition and performances, Martinez and the team enjoyed the experiences and sites that Hollywood has to offer, as well as attending world-class workshops.
Martinez returned with three gold medals and one bronze medal, where he also walked away with three Performer of the World Division Award Winner Trophies, and the highest marks in Contemporary, Broadway and Opera, after performing at the 26th annual World Championship of Performing Arts.
Team South Africa returned with numerous awards and accolades.
“I am so grateful to Dr Ellen Roux who saw the potential in me and believed in my abilities and talents, not only as a teacher and vocal physiotherapist, but as a world-class singer. She has been the national director for The South African Championships of Performing Arts for 26 years now, and her love for the Performing Arts has led to countless great careers for South African performers locally and abroad. Her legacy is a national treasure,” says Martinez.
He has been singing since the age of three and grew up on the stage. He decided to study musical theatre, and has since been cast for lead roles, and has had the opportunity to be do pre-shows for Smokey, Boney M, and Dana Winner.
Martinez is a professional singer, songwriter, and owner of HOTTTalentproductions. He is also a specialist vocal coach to both celebrity and amateur artistes in South Africa, and 14 other countries, and has worked with numerous big names in the industry.
A special part of his work entails using his vocal physiotherapist qualifications, working with patients on pre- and post operation procedures, to ensure the return to their vocal state will be effortless, with no problems in the future.
Martinez would like to thank his parents and his partner, as well as every person who believed in him and supported him throughout this amazing opportunity.
