Two people have lost their lives while two others sustained severe injuries, after two vehicles collided head-on earlier today, January 8, on the N2 road near Humansdorp in the direction of Plettenberg Bay.

According to provincial spokesperson for Department of Transport, Unathi Binqose, the incident occurred at about 07:45 on the N2 at Witteklip Bridge towards Plettenberg Bay.

He said that a Mini Cooper with one male occupant who was travelling from the Humansdorp direction heading to Plettenberg Bay collided with a Hyundai with two men and one woman from Plettenberg Bay heading to Humansdorp.

“The male driver and female passenger in the Hyundai died on impact. The injured driver of the Mini Cooper and passenger of the Hyundai sustained severe injuries and was taken to Kareedouw Hospital for medical attention,” said Binqose.

He said that the main cause of the crash is still unknown at this stage.

Binqose said that a case of culpable homicide has been opened at Stormsriver Saps for further investigations.

The Hyundai had two men and one woman travelling from Plettenberg Bay heading to Humansdorp.

He said that the provincial government is still waiting for the fatality rates for accidents that took place on the Eastern Cape roads which they expect to receive from national government soon.

“I can confirm that we are unfortunately well over 100 fatalities since the beginning of the festive season which saw the launch of the Arrive Alive Campaign,” said Binqose.
