With beautiful black fur with a touch of white, three-year-old Oreo has been at the JBay Animal Rescue Sanctuary for almost two years, and is hoping to find her “purr-fect” home where she can receive all the love and care she so desperately yearns for.
The sanctuary, a non-profit organisation located in Ocean View Township in Jeffreys Bay, provides temporary shelter for dogs and cats, and sterilises at least 80 animals each month in the Kouga region.
Sanctuary manager, Cindy Muller, said that Oreo was brought in by a concerned resident in January 2022, after she and 10 other cats were left to fend for themselves while their owner was away for two weeks.
“The owner contacted me to let me know that they were unable to take care of the cats and we worked out an agreement,” said Muller.
Fortunately, 10 of the 11 cats found homes right away while Oreo patiently waited for her turn.
Finally, nine months later, in September last year, she was adopted.
Sadly, Muller said that Oreo was brought back to the sanctuary again in January this year, as her new owner had moved to a flat and was unable to keep her.
“She has been with us the longest and did get the chance to have her own home for a few months, but we really feel she needs to be in her own home, with her own family to give her love and spoils every day. She deserves to have her own home now,” said Muller.
She said that Oreo is a very relaxed cat who likes to find a nice comfortable spot to chill out all day.
Muller said that as part of the adoption process the sanctuary does a yard check at the potential adopter’s house, and if all is in order, they are welcome to choose a cat or dog of their choice.
She further said that if the adopter has pets at home, they also do a “meet and greet” to see if the animals get along with their new addition.
In addition, Muller said that they charge an adoption fee to cover the cost of sterilisation and the first vaccination.
To help raise awareness about the work the sanctuary does throughout the Kouga region, and to encourage people to adopt the many cats and dogs, in May this year Kouga Express began publishing pictures and short descriptions of each animal.
Thankfully, Muller said that they have had three of their adult cats successfully adopted over the last four months.
She said that they currently have 10 cats at the sanctuary that are eagerly waiting for adoption.
To continue helping more animals in the Kouga area, Muller said that the sanctuary also has a charity shop located at 17 Jeffrey Street, Jeffreys Bay, where they need more donations which they plan to sell to raise money for the sanctuary.
“With funds raised through the charity shop, we are hoping to help more animals in various areas and do more sterilisations,” said Muller.
