The Provincial Head, Major General Mboiki Ones Ngwenya has welcomed the hefty sentence handed down to Nangamso Gratitude Gqwaru (42) by the Mthatha Specialists Commercial Crimes Court on August 16, 2022.

Hawks spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela said this is subsequent to a series of court appearances following Gqwaru's arrest by the Eastern Cape Based Hawk's Serious Corruption Investigation on February 25, 2019 for charges of corruption.

"In October, 2017 Gqwaru whom at the time was employed at Mbizana as an accounts clerk assisted a former employee of the department to enquire about the pay-put of his pension," said Mgolodela.

She added that Gqwaru then informed the complainant of the pay-out date and demanded R30 000 for her assistance.

"The complainant paid the demanded amount. Gqwaru further borrowed more money from the complainant, however, the complainant refused and thereafter lodged a complaint with the Hawks which led to his arrest."

Gqwaru was released on R1 000 bail and was since dismissed by the department through it's internal process.

"She was sentenced to eight years imprisonment. Three years is suspended for five, provided she is not convicted for the same offence during the period of suspension. She will spend five years under incarceration," Mgolodela said.
