Veteran journalist and author, Monwabisi Khininda (60), recently won the SABC’s Umhlobo Wenene FM (UWFM) drama competition in the writing category.

The winners of the competition, sponsored by the Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, were announced live on UWFM by provincial Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture MEC, Nonceba Kontsiwe, on December 4.

Khininda won in the writing category, where he and other competitors submitted a synopsis and a script with two scenes under the theme, Ndafa Ziziyobisi.

He entered the same competition last year and came second in the same writing category.

He hails from Elukhanyisweni in Libode under Nyandeni Local Municipality.

It has always been my dream for my work to get the kind of exposure it will get from winning the Umhlobo Wenene FM drama competition. In my work as an author, drama has not been my strong focus but winning the competition has made me take the genre seriously.
Khininda

Besides his work as an author, Khininda has also made a name for himself as a seasoned journalist and founder of Ikhwezi Lase Mthatha newspaper.

He has authored and published several books, such as an autobiography titled Iinkumbulo Zamandulo, a collection of short stories titled Izabatha and Usiba luka Dabul’edizeni which is a collection of poems.

Khininda revealed that he will soon publish his first drama book titled Ndinjenjenje Andizenzanga, which he developed from the script he submitted for the UWFM drama competition last year.

He has been rewarded with a R20 000 cash prize, as well as a one-year contract with the UWFM drama department where he will be taken through the various processes of putting together a drama for broadcasting, whilst also working on making his winning story a drama that will play on the station soon.

Eastern Cape Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture MEC, Nonceba Kontsiwe, congratulated Khininda for his achievement.

Khininda says he will invest the prize money he won from the competition on his newspaper, Ikhwezi Lase Mthatha.
