Police have been ordered by the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene to activate the 72-hour mobilization following the shooting of two men aged between 33 and 35 at Cicira Junction, Kwa Dosi locality in Mthatha on Wednesday, September 14.
According to police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, the deceased were alleged to have been standing next to a car belonging to one of them when they were accosted by five male suspects who opened fire on the victims.
"The two men died at the scene. It is alleged that members of the community alerted the police who were passing by the crime scene, they then started following the direction to which the suspects had taken," said Kinana.
He added that the pursuit of the suspects around Mpheko river saw the police barraged with gunfire from nearby bushes. This escalated in an exchange of gunfire between the police and the suspects leaving three of the five suspects fatally wounded.
“Two of the five suspects are still at large. Five firearms and ammunitions were found during the incident. The motive for the killings has not yet been established, however, two murder cases and three inquests have been registered for investigation."
Kinana further added that there has been no arrests at this stage, while also stating that none of the police officers who were involved in the incident sustained any injuries.
The police are appealing to the public to come forward with any information that can assist the investigation through contacting the Mthatha Central Police Station or call the Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
