Executive mayor of King Sabatha Dalindyebo (KSD) Local Municipality, Councillor Nyaniso Nelani, said they are planning to increase the sum of the fine given to people illegally dumping rubbish, to R10 000.

Nelani said this forms part of a cleaning campaign held by this municipality with other stakeholders at Ngangelizwe Township in Mthatha, last week. There are three wards that benefited from this.

He said they had worked together with their sector departments, such as OR Tambo District Municipality (ORTDM), to ensure that this campaign was successful.

Nelani said,

This is the beginning of the campaigns led by Community Services, of cleaning and ensuring that they make our areas clean and green. We also want to revive the open spaces and beautify them. This is the old campaign; we are trying to complete the vision that we have as the KSD. This is not the first campaign, because they hosted another one in the intersections to this township recently, but the one that we are hosting today is the mother of all campaigns.

He stated that they were trying to come closer to communities.

Nelani added that they wanted to work with the community members of Ngangelizwe Township to ensure that they keep their area clean.

“We notice that even though we are working so hard, there are still people who do not want to do what is right. We clean all the illegal dumping sites and open spaces, but still people continue to throw rubbish anyhow. By doing this we are showing them the importance of living in a clean environment.”

He confirmed they are not concentrating in Ngangelizwe only, but also in all areas they want people to keep things clean.

Nelani added they have Peace Officers working in these illegal dumping sites, and many people have already been arrested and fined for throwing rubbish in these areas.

“We are in negotiations because we want to increase the amount of the fine now. Before it was R2 000, it went up to R5 000, now it will be R10 000, because our words are falling on deaf ears. We have a lot of dumping sites in KSD and also here in Ngangelizwe. For now, as the council, we were talking about R10 000 and we are about to finalise our suggestion.”

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services in the OR Tambo District Municipality, Councillor Nontyatyambo Gcingca, said they started a cleaning campaign years back, and even adopted Nelson Mandela Drive.

She said that following this they had challenges regarding the budget, and the programme had to be put on the back burner for a while.

Gcingca said,

Now we are reviving the commitment we made, because as the district we are supporting the municipalities. We will make sure that we go with them all the time when they are doing these campaigns.
