The King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) Local Municipality has expressed shock at the killing of one of its employees, Daniel Mxoli (62), a traffic officer, who was shot and killed just after noon today, October 10.

The shooting incident occurred at the corner of Sutherland Street and York Road just metres away from the KSD municipal headquarters.

“From what we gather from witness accounts, the deceased was doing his work and approached a Toyota Tazz that had parked illegally. The driver of the vehicle drove a few metres away from the deceased, stopped his vehicle and walked to the deceased and shot him a few times and drove off. He died on the scene,” said KSD municipal spokesperson, Sonwabo Mampoza.

When Express arrived on the scene, police officers and forensic services had cordoned off the scene and shocked people had gathered around the scene of the shooting.

Attempts to get comment from eyewitnesses were unsuccessful as those approached refused to speak on the matter fearing for their lives.

Mampoza said the deceased had been working for the municipality since 1999 and described him as one of the most diligent and dedicated traffic law enforcement officers within the local municipality.

“The municipality is shocked by this incident as it happens while we are busy devising strategies to deal with high rate of crime and lawlessness within the municipality,” Mampoza added.

He added that the municipality has approached the First National Bank branch to assist with video footage from their CCTV cameras to help apprehend the culprit.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu said that it is alleged that at about 12:15, Mxoli stopped the silver Toyota Tazz when an argument ensued between himself and the driver of the vehicle.

"The vehicle drove off and parked nearby, thereafter the drive approached the traffic officer and shot him twice before fleeing in his car," said Naidu.

A case of murder is under investigation.

Police are appealing to any person who can assist in tracing the suspect to contact SAPS Mthatha detective commander, D/Lt Col Tamsanqa Ntshatsha on 072 102 3468 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or the nearest police station. All information is confidential, and callers may remain anonymous.
