The co-ordinator of Economic Strengthening Livelihood (ESL) from the Songe Social Change non-profit organisation in Mthatha, Snobom Gwityi, confirmed that they had launched Main Safe Space at Ntlaza locality in Libode, recently.

She said that teenagers will use this centre to gain more knowledge, to share their experiences, and also to talk about the challenges they are facing in life.

Gwityi said that they will also equip them with different skills, like agriculture, digital, beadwork, etc, because there is a lack of employment in the country.

There will be social workers who will assist them by providing counselling, and support groups will also be created. Besides this there will be a clinic that will work together with St Barnabas Hospital.

According to her, these teenagers will receive health services from this clinic, and be referred to this hospital if there is a need to do so.”

Gwityi said that police officers had confirmed that the area has a high rate of substance abuse, and this is one of the challenges that led them to open this centre.

According to her, they already have satellites in three districts of OR Tambo District Municipality, so far.

She said that they have four satellites in Libode, two in Ngqeleni, and one in Port St Johns.

One of the beneficiaries from Ntlaza area in Libode, Anesipho Nkukutha, said that this centre will change their lives, because they will not travel long distances when they want to get help from the health facility.

According to her the facilitators from Songe Social Change will always be available now.

“They used to bring a mobile clinic on Thursdays, but now we will not wait for Thursdays since there will be a clinic here and it will operate every day,” said Nkukutha.

She appealed to young people to use this facility because it will have many resources that could help them.
