As the norm dictates, those celebrating their birthdays expect to be showered with gifts to celebrate their special milestone.
That was not the case for one of Mthatha’s oldest hardware stores, Quality Plumbers & Hardware, as it celebrated 40 years since it started trading, instead showered other organisations who have survived for as long or even more, as it has, with gifts.
The biggest gift of the hardware store’s 40-year birthday celebrations went to Mthatha Country Club which received around R50 000 in various prizes and funds, raised through a charity golf tournament Quality Plumbers & Hardware hosted, at the same venue, on November 9, as part of its anniversary festivities.
As if that was not enough, Quality Plumbers & Hardware further dished out R20 000 to four of Mthatha’s oldest schools which each received R5 000 from the store’s birthday largesse.
The schools which received the windfall were Umtata High School, Holy Cross Education Centre, St Johns College and Efata School for the Deaf and Blind.
Quality Plumbers & Hardware director and general manager, Regan Adkins, said,
Pledges from the golf tournament sponsors and Quality Plumbers & Hardware suppliers were also made at the conclusion of the tournament, to give Mthatha Country Club a much-needed facelift and repairs to its derelict infrastructure.
Adkins said that the funds donated to the four schools were to appreciate the role they played in shaping the careers of many well-known professionals from Mthatha.
Quality Plumbers & Hardware started trading in 1983 with four directors, including Regan’s father, Brian Adkins, who had approached the other three with a hardware store idea and the rest, as the saying goes, is history.
Adkins has credited their reputation for quality products as the cornerstone of their survival in a highly competitive business environment for the past four decades of trading.
“You buy a product from our store once and you know you have it for the next 10 to 15 years. All our products are South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) approved,” Adkins concluded.
Quality Plumbers & Hardware is located at Elliott Street, while their second hardware store, trading as Quality Cash and Carry, is located at York Road in Mthatha.
