The Head of Department (HoD) of Education in the Eastern Cape, Mahlubandile Qwase, has called for the immediate suspension of a Nyibiba Primary School teacher after she allegedly forced Grade 2 learners to clean up her vomit.
According to Department of Education spokesperson, Mali Mtima, the Ugie teacher was suspended for despicable misconduct and endangering the health of primary school learners.
"The alleged misconduct happened at school, and due to its seriousness, Qwase has instructed the Joe Gqabi District Manager to put her on precautionary suspension immediately," said Mtima.
Qwase said that the disciplinary measures are made to protect the children. He further instructed the district to activate psychosocial support services for these learners who were allegedly made to clean up her mess.
"I have called upon all educators to conduct themselves as parents at school and in class while also promoting the protection of learner dignity. These allegations are shaming the sector which is supposed to set high moral standards for learners to follow as in local parent educators are expected to teach learners best ways to behave.
"I find it very difficult to believe that a normal human being who is a parent and an educator can do such a thing to young children. The department will also rope in employee wellness to assist in assessing the fitness of the educator to be in class," said Qwase.
