The suspect in the murder case of two police members is still tenth in line on the waiting list for mental observation at the Kimberley Mental Health Hospital, the court heard on Monday, 4 March.
At his previous audio-visual remand (AVR) court appearance on 29 January, Daniel Wilfred Alberts was number 17 on the waiting list.
Alberts is charged with two counts of murder, three counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, the theft of a motor vehicle, and the theft of a laptop.
The murder charges followed the shooting and killing of two police members of the Kimberley Flying Squad on Tuesday, 22 August 2023.
Sgt Kediemetse Masilo (45) and Const. Okaetse Mandindi (35) were shot and killed after following a suspected stolen vehicle, which the suspect was driving.
Alberts was arrested later the same day, and first appeared in court on Thursday, 24 August. During his first appearance Alberts, with a Pretoria address, indicated that he was a psychiatric patient who had been admitted to 27 institutions.
Apart from his first physical appearance in court, Alberts’ other court appearances were through a video link of the AVR system.
On Monday he made a court appearance in person, due to the AVR system not working. He was dressed in black trousers, a black jacket, a white shirt, and wore glasses.
His Legal Aid representative is Shan Davids, with Nicola van Niekerk the state prosecutor.
Magistrate Khubasnee Padayachee postponed the case to 3 April for mental observation. Alberts remains in custody.
