Six men who were allegedly involved in the hijacking and assaulting of a male victim in Bathlaros close to Kuruman, were arrested on Sunday, 3 March.
According to information received, the victim was allegedly hijacked on Sunday morning at approximately 02:00 in Bathlaros.
Brig. Mashay Gamieldien, police spokesperson, said the suspects apparently stabbed the victim multiple times and drove with him to the Mokala Mall in Kuruman where they continued beating him while demanding the pin of his bank card.
After withdrawing money from the victim’s account at the ATM, they apparently drove with him to a second ATM in Kuruman where they again withdrawn cash.
The suspects then drove the victim’s grey Renault Kwid, with him inside, to the cemetery close to the Kalahari High School where they left him.
The suspects fled the scene in the victim’s Renault, leaving the badly injured man for dead.
At approximately 09:00 on Sunday morning a passer-by discovered the badly injured victim and assisted him in contacting his family and the police.
Gamieldien said the swift response by members of the JTG Highway Patrol, Kuruman detectives and K9 unit resulted in the apprehension and arrest of the six suspects.
After the police were informed about the incident, the team was mobilised and they patrolled the area in Mapiniki, where they spotted the hijacked vehicle driving towards them.
The members forced the vehicle off the road and arrested the six men who were found in possession of knives believed to be the instruments used to assault the victim.
The victim’s vehicle was also confiscated and the victim was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Kuruman Magistrate’s Court soon.
The Northern Cape provincial commissioner, Lt. Gen. Koliswa Otola, applauded the team for their relentless efforts in the pursuit of bringing perpetrators to justice. The police will not tolerate lawlessness in the province, she stated.
