The Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Nomthetheleli Mene has hailed the speedy arrest of two suspects allegedly involved in the death of two people, including a 14-year-old teenager, and the injury of another in Bethelsdorp on June 22.

According to police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, it is alleged that at about 18:15 on June 22, Kurtley Rossouw (14) and Justin Malgas (25) were fatally shot in Lawrence Erasmus Drive in Bloemendal, while a 26-year-old man was injured.

“It is alleged that three men were walking in Lawrence Erasmus Drive when shots were fired at them from a silver Renault vehicle. Malgas died at the scene while one victim was taken to hospital and the third victim ran away,” said Naidu.

“Rossouw who was outside his yard, was fatally hit by a stray bullet.”

Naidu said on June 27 the investigating officer arrested a 33-year-old man at his house in Ambraal Street in Gelvandale, while the second suspect, who is 21 years old, was arrested at the New Law Court in Gqeberha while he was attending court on another matter.

“Cheslyn Philander and Zane Geyers appeared in court on June 28 on two charges of murder and one attempted murder. They will appear in court again on July 6 for a formal bail application,” said Naidu.

She said the incident is gang-related.

Mene commended the investigating officer on the swift arrests.

“We will be working closely with the prosecuting authority to ensure that these suspects do not get bail. Gang violence has a devastating effect on the innocent citizens who are caught in the gang wars. We encourage citizens to take a stand and report criminals either voluntarily or anonymously to police,” said Mene.
