Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Maj Gen Vuyisile Ncata commended the men and women in blue for their outstanding efforts during this week when they made significant arrests and confiscations.

Ncata believes that this relentless crackdown on criminals sends a strong message that illegal activities will not be tolerated.

Some of the successes achieved this week are as follows:

August 21

According to police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, on Monday, August 21, SAPS Humewood arrested a 20-year-old suspect allegedly involved in a business robbery at 12:06 in Govan Mbeki Street in central on the same day.

"It is alleged that the complainant was in the shop when the suspect entered and threatened him and demanded money.

The complainant scuffled with the suspect and managed to apprehend him and confiscated a replica firearm," said Janse Van Rensburg.

She further said that the suspect was arrested on charges of business robbery.

August 23

Janse Van Rensburg said that in an unrelated matter on Wednesday, August 23, at 00:12 near Truckers Inn, Public Order Policing was performing crime prevention duties when they noticed a suspect standing nearby.

"He was searched and a silver revolver (serial number filed off) with six rounds of ammunition was found in his possession," said Janse Van Rensburg.

She said that the 25-year-old was detained on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

August 24

Janse Van Rensburg said that on Thursday, August 24, at approximately 19:45, SAPS Mount Road arrested two suspects involved in a house robbery in Perridgevale.

She said that it is alleged that at about 13:10 suspects entered a residence occupied by students in Haven Road, Perridgevale and stole four cell phones, and fled the scene in a blue VW Golf.

"SAPS Mount Road members received information that the blue VW Golf was driving in Sydenham," said Janse Van Rensburg.

She said that the suspects were found in Milner Street.

Janse Van Rensburg said that two suspects aged 21 and 22 were arrested and during the search, the members confiscated a replica firearm.

August 25

She said that in another unrelated success, on Friday, August 25, at about 03:15, the SAPS Anti-Gang Unit executed a search warrant at a house in Bowles Street in Bloemendal where a revolver (serial number filed off) and eight rounds of ammunition were found.

"A 32-year-old suspect was arrested on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition," said Janse Van Rensburg.

She said that on the same day at approximately 22:30, SAPS Walmer responded to a complaint in Chase Street, Walmer Location.

Janse Van Rensburg said that on arrival they gathered information about a suspect in possession of a firearm.

"During the search, a revolver (serial number filed off) and 82 rounds of ammunition were confiscated," said Janse Van Rensburg.

She said that the suspect aged 39 years old was arrested on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

Janse Van Rensburg said that some of the suspects have already appeared in court while the others will appear in their respective courts on August 28.

"We are warning criminals that their behaviour will not be accepted as we are committed to upholding the law and ensuring the safety of our citizens. Your actions would not go unchecked," said Ncata.
