Schools cricket in Nelson Mandela Bay is off to a thrilling start in 2024.

The annual Grey Cricket Festival starts in Gqeberha tomorrow, and we will see four fantastic days of high quality school cricket.

Twelve schools from around the country will be in action at the festival, which is hosted alternately by Grey High and Bloemfontein’s Grey College.

Playing at home on the Pollock Field, Grey High will start with a tough fixture when they take on Menlo Park from Pretoria tomorrow.

There is always huge interest in the matches of Grey College, and they will play against Selborne College on the first day.

On the second day Grey High will be involved in a timed format match against King Edward from Johannesburg.

On Saturday it is Grey against Glenwood in a 50-over match, and the hosts will finish on Sunday with a fixture against Jeppe.

Other Gqeberha schools which will be in action are Pearson and Framesby.

They will have the home advantage but some tough fixtures await, especially for Pearson who will take on the likes of Potchefstroom Volkskool and Grey College.

The festival is the ideal opportunity for players to catch the eye of selectors, coaches, scouts and members of the media so early in the year with good performances.

There is a good chance that we will see some future stars making their mark, as the participating schools include some of the best nurseries of cricket talent in the country.

Eastern Province did not have the best Khaya Majola Week for u/19 teams last month in Makhanda, and the performances of the Gqeberha cricketers at the festival will be followed with great interest, with an eye on the future.

After the Majola Week a squad of 13 players was picked for the Eastern Warriors to compete in the Cricket South Africa Cubs Week, which ended in Stellenbosch yesterday.

The squad included three players from Gqeberha. They are the all-rounder, Jean Upman (Grey), who is also the captain, and the spinners, Esa Gangat (Pearson) and Hamza Khan (Westering).
