Murder accused Johnny Baartman makes virtual court appearance

  • Ex-Gqeberha teacher, Johnny Baartman, accused of murdering his ex-wife, Desiree Baartman last year, appeared in the Gqeberha Magistrate's Court virtually from St Albans Prison today.
  • State Prosecutor, Melani Hammett revealed that Baartman had abandoned his bail.
  • The magistrate granted approval for the case to be remanded until Wednesday, March 27, for further investigation.


The ex-Gqeberha teacher, Johnny Baartman, accused of murdering his ex-wife Desiree Baartman last year, appeared in the Gqeberha Magistrate's Court virtually from St Albans Prison today, February 1.

In the court proceedings, State Prosecutor, Melani Hammett revealed that Baartman had forfeited his bail, 

She further said Baartman's legal representative, Qhamni Sinefu, was absent from court.

Hammett proposed a postponement of the matter to Wednesday, March 27, for further investigation.

During the court proceedings, Baartman wore a red t-shirt and black pants, and maintained a composed and neutral demeanor. 

In the courtroom audience, Baartman's son and brother attended the court proceedings.
