Armed response officers are trained to track down suspects, no matter what happens. This normally requires a pursuit by foot and sometimes a high-speed car chase. In Gqeberha recently, this also involved jumping into the ocean waves.
“Two of our armed response officers responded to a call about a business robbery on Friday evening, March 22, in North End. An alleged suspect tried to evade apprehension by running away and the officers followed in hot pursuit,” explains Bernadette Nel-Naude, Gqeberha branch manager at Fidelity ADT.
“The officers saw the suspect run down the railway lines before he jumped into the ocean in an attempt to get away. It became clear very quickly that the suspect was in distress as he was being washed up against nearby rocks.”
Nel-Naude says the officers realised they had to act quickly.
“They alerted the NSRI to send a rescue team to the scene but also jumped into the water to pull the suspect to safety.
"After a short while they were able to bring the suspect safely to shore where medical and emergency teams were waiting to treat him.”
The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment while the owner of the business premises that had earlier been robbed, visited the Mount Road police station to open a case against the alleged suspect.
“Well done to our officers who went above and beyond to bring this suspect to book. I hope this shows that no matter where criminals try to hide in Gqeberha, the town’s “long arm of the law” will find them and apprehend them,” says Nel-Naude.
