It is the fourth year in a row that Motherwell-based school Soqhayisa Secondary obtained a 100 percent pass rate in their 2023 matric class.
Apparently many years ago one learner was shot dead in the toilet by an unknown killer. Some parents were unwilling to send their children to study at Soqhayisa Secondary.
When Mlungisi Nopote was appointed Soqhayisa Secondary headmaster in 2008, parents started to gain confidence in this school, as the results of the Grade 12s improved year after year. From 2020 to 2023, Soqhayisa Secondary maintained their 100 percent pass rate for their Grade 12 class.
According to Nopote, 307 sat for the 2023 final examinations, with 279 candidates obtaining a bachelor’s pass, and 27 candidates a diploma pass, while only one candidate obtained a higher certificate pass.
“It is a normal practice for us to have extra classes, as it is part of our system. It is not a special thing that teachers teach up until 5pm, but sometimes we also decide as staff that teachers should teach up until 10pm,” said Nopote.
“We also hold some camps during the trial examinations and we will teach until 10pm. We know that there are social challenges where our learners come from. Furthermore, during the camps, revision takes place to prepare our learners for final examinations.
“Our dedicated and committed educators also add value to the school, so that its matric class pass rate becomes consistent. The Kutlwanong programme that caters for mathematics and physical classes does not only help Soqhayisa Secondary, but also helps other schools. Our school is the centre for the Kutlwanong Mathematics and Physical Programme. Our top three learners, Oviweyo Ngoyi, Anathi Tshanga, and Liyabona Hloyi, passed all their subjects with distinctions and are in East London, as they were invited by the MEC Fundile Gade,” concluded Nopote.
“Our SGB takes decisions with the principal, management, staff and parents so that we uplift the standard of our school. Discipline forms an integral part of our school,” said Soqhayisa chairperson, Sandisa Nqontsha.
Deputy Chairperson, Nelson Katikati, also revealed that their school would stick to their systems this year to maintain Soqhayisa Secondary School’s 100 percent matric pass rate.
