Four people, including a teenage girl, were apprehended on Thursday after allegedly stealing a luxury car from a dealership and using it in a robbery in Newton Park.
Police spokesperson, Capt. Sandra Janse van Rensburg, said that during the early hours of the morning on Thursday, SAPS Mount Road members were on the N2 travelling towards Mount Road when they spotted a red Audi A3. Upon further investigation they established that the vehicle was circulated as stolen.
As soon as the driver of the Audi noticed the police vehicle, they sped away. A high-speed chase ensued and with back-up the members successfully forced the Audi to stop on the N2 near the Deal Party area. There were seven occupants in the vehicle and they were all detained for further questioning. During the search of the vehicle the members confiscated a replica firearm.
Among the suspects there were four men between the ages of 21 and 28 years, and three women aged between 15 and 26 years. The Audi A3 was reported stolen the previous week from a car dealership in North End.
"Investigations revealed that the Audi was used in a business robbery that was reported on Wednesday at approximately 17:25 at a filling station in Cape Road, Newton Park," Janse van Rensburg said.
"It is alleged that one suspect entered the shop and pretended to be a customer. Once inside, he pulled out a firearm and demanded cash. The suspect took an undisclosed amount of cash, jumped into a red Audi and fled from the scene."
After all of the suspects were questioned, the detectives released two of the men and the one female because they could not be linked. The two men, aged 25 and 27 years, will be charged for business robbery, theft of a motor vehicle and for the possession of suspected stolen property while the 15-year-old girl will be charged for the business robbery. The 19-year-old woman will be charged for the possession of suspected stolen property.
They will be appearing in the Gqeberha Magistrates Court today, October 3.
