Humewood police arrested a second suspect for his alleged involvement in the attack and robbery of an Atlas security official on May 29.

The suspect, Siyabulela Stana (37) was arrested on Thursday, June 8 for the assault of the security official, as well as a string of crimes that followed that night in Western Road.

According to Colonel Priscilla Naidu, police spokespers, detectives followed up information and at about 09:30 on Thursday Stana was arrested in St Georges Park. "He was detained on charges of robbery, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, house robbery and murder," Naidu said.

According to police reports, at approximately 20:30, a group of suspects attempted to rob a person in Western Road and when the person spotted the security vehicle, he ran towards it for assistance.

"It is further alleged that the suspects then turned their focus on the security official. He was beaten and his service pistol, a 9mm firearm was taken. A case of robbery and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was opened for investigation."

Naidu said after running off with the firearm, at about 20:45, two of the suspects confronted two students as they were leaving their flat in Belmont Terrace.

"They were shoved back into the flat and robbed of five cell phones and two laptops. One of the students was also assaulted over the head with a firearm. A case of house robbery was opened."

"It is further alleged that at about 22:30 the suspects then went to a dilapidated building in St Patrick Street in Central where they demanded money owed to them by two people. When one person (29) did not have the money, he was shot in his buttocks. He was taken to hospital. A case of attempted murder is under investigation," Naidu said.

At about 22:40 the suspects proceeded to Albany Road where they sent someone to buy a bottle of beer. On his return, it is alleged that one of the suspects randomly shot and killed Loyiso Sinandile (30) in the street. Police have opened a murder case.

Police believe that the security officer’s firearm was used to commit the offences.

"The hunt for the third suspect continues."

The other suspect, Bongani Makasi (33) has been charged with robbery and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He appeared alongside Stana in the Gqeberha Magistrate's Court today. His case has been postponed to Tuesday, June 13 and he remains in custody. Stana is remanded in custody till August 4.
